Executive Chef Roger Stettler and Sous Chef Noel Badillo focus the menu on an array of prime cuts of steak, including Japanese Kobe beef, as well as the freshest seafood and seasonal island produce. Duo is open for breakfast and dinner. On the pricey side, but food, service and poolside views make it worth it. Call for dinner reservations.

Five Palms

Beach Grill, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner in the Mana Kai at Keawakapu Beach. The oceanfront atmosphere, and great food makes every meal feel like a special occasion, but don't wait for one to go and enjoy this treasure of South Kihei.

Casanovas

Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli website describes it best. This is one of our very favorite dining experiences on Maui:

"1986 four Italian friends, just arrived from the Mainland, opened Casanova Deli in Makawao. It was an instant success. In Upcountry Maui times were ripe for cappuccino and latte, freshly baked croissants and Gourmet pastas, hot Panini over Focaccia and fresh homemade mozzarella cheese. In 1989 the large cowboy joint known as Partners, occupying the larger part of the building, folded its door and the neighbor Gourmet Deli expanded its arms. Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli was born. An eclectic mix of family restaurant, real contemporary Italian cuisine and top of the line entertainment center, it took Maui by surprise. Since then, Casanova keeps getting top recognition every time a survey is held between Maui residents: Best Italian Restaurant, Best Pizza, Best Dinner Value, Best kid friendly Restaurant, Best Dance floor, Best Ladies night, Best Late night, Best single scene in Maui are the awards that show off on Casanova’s walls."

Seawatch Gannons Restaurant

Seawatch is the restaurant in the clubhouse of the Gold and Emerald Golf Courses in Wailea. Phone 808-875-8080. The restaurant was bought in 2009 by Beverly Gannon, the chef-owner of Haliimaile General Store, and the name is changing from Seawatch to Gannon's.

Unlike most of Maui's top restaurants, The Seawatch allows you to enjoy their fabulous food at breakfast, lunch or dinner. The view of the golf course and ocean is gorgeous no matter which meal you choose. Prior to 2009, Seawatch was owned by the same people as the Plantation House restaurant in Kapalua.

The breakfast menu includes Molokai French Toast and Crabcakes Benedict, along with all the usual breakfast items. Lunch choices include salads such as Seafood Papaya and sandwiches such as Mango Chutney Chicken Wrap. Dinner includes several delicious fish and meat preparations, all beautifully presented.

For excellent food and view in Wailea, you can't beat Seawatch. It is a favorite for weddings, and parties too.

You can limit or eliminate the need for the quarantine by following the directions (to the letter). All pets being brought to Hawaii will have to meet certain regulations. Many of the Buyers on Maui are Investor Buyers. These Investor Buyers usually rent out their property either long term or short term (less than 30 days) once they purchase them.

Hurricane's:
Hurricane Season is from June-November

Every family is expected to have prepared a hurricane kit in the event of a hurricane. A kit can also be good to have in case of Earthquake which is a very rare occurrence on Maui.

Although a serious Hurricane has not in Maui in a long time, no Island is immune to hurricanes.

Earthquakes:

Hawaii does have earthquakes. Although most are to small to feel they are closely related to volcanic activity. You may remember hearing of the October 15, 2006 earthquake measuring 6.0 on the richter scale. Most damage was focused on the North and West sides of the Big Island.

Volcanos:
The only active volcano is Kilauea on the Big Island which has had an active flow since 1983.

The idea for the Roots of Inspiration: Contemporary Functional Furniture exhibit came from the well known Maui furniture maker, Peter Naramore. His source of inspiration was an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, titled New American Furniture: The Second Generation of Studio Furnituremakers. Their concept in 1989, was to invite a group of renowned furniture makers to use antique furniture as a point of inspiration to create unique new “studio furniture.”

Maui County Tax Record Information

When are my taxes due and what period does this bill cover?
A. Real Property taxes are assessed annually and are due in two equal installments. First Installment (Cycle 1) – Due on or before August 20 for the period July 1 to December 31. Second Installment (Cycle 2) – Due on or before February 20 for the period January 1 to June 30.


What is a Circuit Breaker credit?
A. Circuit Breaker is a credit to real property taxes for taxpayers who are classified as homeowner who filed and was granted a home exemption claim under section 3.48.450. Upon proper application, a homeowner shall be entitled to a credit in the amount that the real property tax assessed on the homeowner property tax exceeds two per cent of household income. The credit shall be applied in equal pro rata amounts against each tax payment due for the tax year following the year in which an application for credit is submitted and granted

How do I calculate my tax bill?
A. Sample of calculating your tax bill; Property Value – Exemption (if applicable) = Net Taxable Value Net Taxable Value x Tax Rate/(per $1,000 of value) = Tax Tax – Tax Credit (for qualified homeowners) = Tax Bill

Agriculture Use If your property is in agriculture use such as farming of a crop, you may receive a special agriculture use assessment upon approval of an agriculture use application and/or dedication. This special assessment lowers the taxable amount on the land.
Homeowner's Exemption If you are an owner occupant, you may qualify for the homeowner's exemption of $300,000 which reduces your net taxable value and the tax rate. If you own and occupy your property as your principal residence and file a Home Exemption Application by December 31, the exemption will take effect the following assessment year. For a History of Maui we will start with the Hawaiian history and move forward into today:

In Hawaii there are legends and oral history passed down to explain many things including the creation of the Island of Maui. The demigod Maui is famous for many things including pulling the Island of Maui from the sea with his magical fish hook, and for causing the sun to remain on Haleakala for longer days for his people. Haleakala which looms largely over South Maui was named by the Hawaiians as "House of the Sun".

Early Hawaiians that settled in South Maui were fishermen. Upcountry on the slopes above were the farmers who farmed many things but a main stable was the sweet potato. Taro came from the Wailuku area of Maui. The early Hawaiians under the direction of Mo'i Umi constructed three fishponds to be created at the Kalepolepo area of North Kihei. The mullet from these ponds was for the alii or chief. Hawaiians referred to Kihei as "Kama'ole" which means "barren". Without the water used to irrigate the area South Maui would indeed be "barren" as evidenced by the non watered areas "mauka" (mountainside) of Piilani Highway.

When Kamehameha Nui invaded Maui in 1790 he landed his fleet of war canoes in South Maui. The reigning chief fought back hard, and Kamehameha ordered his canoes to be destroyed in a fight to the death approach at battle. There would be no retreat on his part and they forced the existing Maui warriors back to Waikapu.

The first "European" to arrive came to the very South end of South Maui and a bay there is named for him: La Perouse. He landed near there in 1786. Foreign missionaries came later and many churches in South Maui were established including the older one still seen today in Makena.

Maui is the 2nd largest of the Hawaiian islands and is approximately 48 miles (76.8km) long and 26 miles (41.6km) wide, totaling 728 square miles. South Maui is comprised of Maalaea, Kihei, Wailea and Makena. Maui County includes the islands of Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and Molokai. The island of Maui is comprised of 2 shield volcanoes that overlapped to form the flat isthmus between. The West Maui Mountains are actually one mountain named Mauna Kahalawai that has eroded by rainfall to the point where it has the appearance of a mountain range. Haleakala "House of the Sun" on the other side of the isthmus is much younger and shows less wear with less rainfall.

In the 1960's water was piped to the area from Central Maui making it an attractive area to live, vacation and work. Condos sprung up heavily in the 1970's as did shopping centers. The roads also were paved. A sugar cane factory was tried at one time in South Maui but met with failure. You can still see plenty of sugar cane fields between Maalaea and Kihei and the cane fields are burned mostly at night and in the early morning you can see the brown haze float out over South Maui's waters. There has been a push for cane burning to end and the sugar industry has looked into other ways of harvesting, but for now cane burning is the preferred method.

Don't miss Upcountry and East Maui when you visit here either. Both areas have rich history to share. The Tedeschi Winery located at Ulupalakua Ranch shows the history of cattle ranching here on Maui and has historic photos on display. Going to East Maui The Hana Museum is rich in its cultural items to share. Heiau and other culturally significant areas can be explored in Hana including the Wainapanapa Beach Park. Past Hana in Kipahulu is also the grave of famous aviator Charles Lindeburgh.

Pineapple fields can be found on the West side in the Kapalua area past Lahaina, in Central Maui up against the West Maui Mountains and from the North Shore Ha'iku area to Upcountry Pukalani, and Makawao. This crop is still hand picked although there is a conveyor belt that moves with the pickers that takes the fruit up to the truck to be stacked by other workers. Maui is famous for its "Maui Gold" variety of pineapple that is less acidic and has a rich gold color.

Tourism is Maui's largest economic base today. People come from many countries to stroll the sandy beaches, snorkel in the clear water, and to experience the Aloha here. A luau is not to be missed and the Old Lahaina Luau is one of my personal favorites. Shopping at The Shops at Wailea or on Front Street Lahaina you will find everything from souveniers, clothing, restaurants and fine art galleries. Once a week in Kahului at the Maui Community College there is the local Swap Meet which features souveniors, many being made on Maui. There is definitely something for everyone on Maui and we know everyone that comes here and is touched with the Aloha Spirit will leave some of their own "history" behind.

Hawaiian Words

When staying in Hawaii you may find yourself needing to know some of the local language. In Hawaii not only is English spoken but people do blend in the Hawaiian Language frequently and you will hear it in songs being played on the radio too.
